At first it may seem strange for the cups to be mounted in the corner of the seat and at an angle. However, from the seated position and looking down at the mount, the jacks will be pointed at you and easy to plug in the headset.

The recessed mounting with the jacks pointing forward keeps them from digging into your side and if you trip over the cord while getting out of the aircraft then the worst thing it will do is unplug the jacks, not break them off.
